2020 Year in Review: Resilience & Community Through Change

December 31, 2020

2020 was a year unlike any other, defined by unexpected challenges and the incredible strength of our community. Despite the global pandemic, Happy 2 be Home remained dedicated to its mission, proving that resilience and kindness can shine even in the darkest moments. From transitioning to virtual events to approving major home modification grants, here is how we navigated a year of change together.

📰 News & Organization Milestones

  • Digital Communication: We continued to keep our supporters informed by using our email platform and our Facebook page.
  • Community Resilience: Despite COVID-19 restrictions forcing many shifts in our operations, the resilience of our volunteers and donors ensured that our support for chronically ill children never wavered.
  • Generous Community Support:
    • Jr. Women’s Club of Boyertown: Generously donated $400 raised during their Virtual Girls Night Out Basket Raffle.
    • Boyertown United Way: Donated $1,600 specifically to support Alaina’s front door accessibility project.

🛠️ 2020 Home Modification Projects

Throughout 2020, we navigated pandemic-related delays to continue advancing critical home modification projects for our families:

  • Sofia: We welcomed Sofia and her family, initiating plans to evaluate essential bathroom modifications for their home.
  • Alaina: Continued working on the front door project, which faced delays due to COVID-19 safety measures.
  • Elliott & Henry: Approved a $14,000 grant for a ceiling lift system to assist the family with daily transfers as the boys grow.
  • Elena: Approved a $40,000 grant for her garage-to-bedroom conversion, with the initial check distributed to begin construction.
  • Michael: Approved a $17,100 grant for an exterior elevator at his home, distributing the initial check for work to commence.
  • Rubi: Plans for an accessible bedroom and bathroom remain on hold while we seek additional funding.

🥞 Community Events & Fundraising

  • Designer Purse Bingo: Our February 1st event was a massive success, raising over $3,000 just before the pandemic shifted our plans.
  • Virtual “If You Build It, They Will Run” 5K: In August, we successfully transitioned our signature race to a virtual format for health and safety, allowing participants to complete their run anytime between Aug 7–16.
  • Guest Beertender Night at Stable 12: We hosted the second successful fundraising night on August 31, with Michael Kropp providing live acoustic favorites and 10% of sales donated to H2bH.
  • Annual Car Show: Held on September 5th at New Hanover UMC, bringing cool cars and community together for a safe outdoor afternoon.
  • Puck Challenge: We introduced a new, creative fundraiser via video to keep our community engaged and inspired.
