2015 was a remarkable year of growth, powerful recognition, and life-changing impact for Happy 2 be Home. From national media honors for our leadership to expanded regional partnerships and critical home accessibility builds, here is a look back at the major milestones, home modifications, and community events that defined our year.
📰 News & Organization Milestones
- Working Mother of the Year Recognition: Susan Wendel was named Working Mother of the Year by Johnson & Johnson and Working Mother Magazine. The Reading Eagle published a featured article highlighting Susan’s achievements, her family’s resilience through Charlotte’s illness, and the inspiring story of how Happy 2 be Home was born.
- Strategic Community Grants & Partnerships:
- Secured a $2,000 grant through the United Way of Boyertown.
- Formed a valuable partnership with Fred’s Footsteps, allowing us to leverage up to $10,000 in additional regional grant support for our families.
- Media & Community Outreach:
- Board member Susan Wendell appeared on WBYN radio to promote our annual 5K event and share the Happy 2 be Home mission.
- Partnered with the United Way of Boyertown on their annual Community Calendar program.
- Board & Volunteer Growth: Expanded volunteer outreach for key organizational roles, including Treasurer and community at-large board members to support our ongoing mission.
🛠️ 2015 Home Modification Projects
Throughout 2015, Happy 2 be Home continued adapting home environments to ensure safety, accessibility, and comfort for local children with chronic, long-term disabilities:
- Schwartz Family: Completed a full bedroom and bathroom accessibility renovation for Ethan.
- Fritz Family: Completed a long-awaited driveway expansion project following winter weather delays.
- Purcell Family: Approved $8,650 in funding to construct an accessibility ramp, landing, and swing area for Nicki Purcell.
- Butler Family: Completed essential roof repairs just in time for the winter season.
- Jones Family: Conducted site visits and project planning for a safer, accessible bathroom renovation for 14-year-old Rohan.
- Upcoming Bids & Planning: Advanced plans and contractor bidding for upcoming home modification projects for the Johnson and St. Juste families.
🥞 Community Events & Fundraising
- 6th Annual Unionville Run for Our Sons 5K: Held on April 18, 2015, in honor of Elliott and Henry Johnson, with proceeds donated directly to Happy 2 be Home.
- Annual “If You Build It, They Will Run” 5K: Welcomed around 200 registered runners at New Hanover United Methodist Church on a beautiful August day, raising approximately $10,000.
- Community Events & Fundraisers:
- Hosted the ACAC Family Swim Night in Downingtown.
- Held the Annual Classic Car & Bike Show at New Hanover United Methodist Church.
- Celebrated the 2nd Annual Jared Pishock Memorial Golf Tournament.
- Announced upcoming fall/winter events including Coach Bingo at Keystone Fire Hall and partnerships with Auctions for a Cause.
